Very insightful blog post. I believe that the "top-secret" cause can be so rooted in company policy that the immediate management may not have the tools nor the political capital to make the necessary changes to avoid event that stem from the cause. The political capital may come after the event occurs, depending on the magnitude of the event. But wouldn't it be much more effective to have a culture that heads off these events prior to them surfacing? This takes a culture of constant change. Change is scary for most people, even middle management. This type of culture needs to be developed and grown from the top down.

Well, a new minion is always going to need more hand-holding than one who's been around for a while. What would be micromanaging to an experienced employee, is really just training for a new hire.

The good news is that you can reduce the time sucks, even when you're training a new minion. You know there'll be things that the minion is going to need to learn through experience, so figure out what you can do to fast-track it.

Example: for a writing minion, have a cheat sheet that shows a bunch of lines of sample text in two columns. The first column is your Don't say it like this column, so write that text in a style that doesn't fit with yours. Your second column is your Instead, say it like this column, where you take the first sentence and rewrite it in a style that fits better with your org.

Does that help?

This came at the perfect time… as usual. Working with my newbie minions is tough! (They're willing and eager and talented, but not experienced -- which is why I can afford them.) But they are coming along nicely.

I have a really hard time letting go of ownership. Because… well… when it comes to creative work, it's important that, say, what Minion #2 writes is in a tone that will fit in with the rest of my business' tone. It doesn't have to be perfect and it doesn't have to be MY voice. But she requires lots of editing to get there for the first few pieces.

I talked thru the edits with her, and looks like her newer stuff is much, much better.

What do you do when you've hired minions in an almost training capacity?
